PDF 2.0 - A quick overview
It is rare for industrial products to survive for more than 20 years – especially in the IT industry. Not even the inventors of the PDF could have imagined just how successful their file format would be when they launched the first version of Acrobat in June 1993. The members of the International Organization for Standardization (ISO) have been working on the next generation of this popular format.
PDF Tools News & Enhancements - July 2018
News from our development crew about new PDF features and PDF software
Most people are focused on the World Cup this summer, but for us it’s final release time – Release 4.11 is available starting today. Now the ball is in your court! As usual, you just need to take a look at the documentation to find out about all the features in the new final release.
For now, though, we’d like to highlight two things. First, we have a new product that we love to use and we hope you like it too. The new PDF OCR tool is a huge help with optical character recognition, tagging to prepare for PDF/A archiving (level A) and processing of barcodes and QR codes. Second, we have made a lot of progress towards integrating the new PDF 2.0 standard with its various innovations and improvements.
3-Heights® PDF OCR – The new PDF OCR tool enriches PDF documents with information from an OCR engine. It can process scanned documents, digitally created documents and mixed documents. In particular, the tool can recognize text contained in images or created using vector graphics or incomplete fonts.
The PDF OCR tool also supports document accessibility and tagging, and it can insert structural information into documents or supplement documents that already contain structural information. And even beyond processing text and structural information, this tool is able to recognize and embed barcodes and QR codes.
The PDF OCR tool optimizes the number of calls to the OCR engine and utilizes the option of asynchronous OCR processing to enable high page throughput.
PDF 2.0 – The new PDF standard ISO 32000-2 was released in July 2017. For more information about the standard, read our article PDF 2.0 – next Generation.
This release of the 3 Heights™ software lets you read and write PDF 2.0 files. The new rendering engine can also display PDF 2.0 files flawlessly. Editing functions like Merge, Split, Optimize and more will follow in later releases. Products in the Classic line do not currently support the editing of PDF 2.0 files yet either.
PAdES - We have implemented the new PAdES standard in our software to enable you to easily create, update and verify digital signatures in PDF format in applications that have to meet European eIDAS requirements.
Of course, we’ve already provided you with Release Notes that include all the details – we hope you enjoy reading them and testing the new features. We always welcome your feedback! We are already hard at work on the next release, so until next time, we hope you have a great, exciting, successful summer!
