About this documentation site

This page covers how the Pdftools documentation site organizes content and how to get the most out of it.

Site structure

The documentation home page groups products into menus in the top navigation bar:

  • SDKs: Pdftools SDK, Toolbox add-on, PDF Viewer SDK, Other shell tools & SDKs.
  • Conversion Service: All-in-one solution for automating document workflows.
  • AI Smart Redact: AI-powered redaction.
  • Resources: Licenses, PDF information, Support, What’s new.

After you open a product, the product’s sidebar appears. Each product section has its own landing page. Start there if you’re new to a product.

How search works

Open search from any page with the search bar at the top, or press Ctrl/Cmd + K. Search covers every product in the documentation.

Algolia powers the keyword search. Results group by product, then sort by Algolia relevance.

Prioritize results from the current product

When you’re browsing a specific product such as Pdftools SDK, you can promote results from that product to the top of the list. Turn on the Prioritize results from current product toggle in the search footer.

The toggle is off by default. Your choice persists across sessions in your browser. Search always covers every product. The toggle only changes the ordering.

Earlier versions

Some queries match both the current version and earlier versions of a product. In those cases, the earlier-version results appear in a separate From earlier versions section after the main results.

Ask AI

The Pdftools documentation includes an AI assistant powered by Kapa.ai. The assistant answers questions about Pdftools products using the documentation, API references, and related resources as its knowledge base.

Open the assistant in either of these ways:

  • Select the floating Ask AI button. The button is available on every documentation page.
  • Open search with Ctrl/Cmd + K, then select the Can you tell me about suggestion at the start of the results.

For best results, name the specific product in your question (for example, “How do I convert a PDF to PDF/A with Pdftools SDK?”).

Connect to AI tools through MCP

The Ask AI dialog includes a Use MCP menu. MCP (Model Context Protocol) lets external AI tools query the Pdftools knowledge base directly:

  • Add to Cursor and Add to VS Code: Install the MCP server in the IDE with one click.
  • Add to Claude Code: Copy a CLI command for installing the MCP server.
  • Copy MCP URL: Copy the server URL for any MCP-compatible client such as Claude or ChatGPT.

Versioning

The Pdftools SDK, Toolbox add-on, PDF Viewer SDK, Pdftools OCR Service, and Conversion Service publish the current version alongside earlier versions. The current version omits the version number from the URL. Earlier versions live under /PRODUCT/VERSION/, such as /pdf-tools-sdk/1.13/.

Use the version dropdown in the navigation bar to switch between versions of the same product.
