Since then the PDF and PDF/A formats have developed into a powerful, widely-used format and ISO standard with virtually unlimited application options. Over the same course of time the company PDF Tools AG has become one of the most important enterprises in the marketplace for PDF technology and has played a pivotal role in the design of the PDF/A ISO standard for long-term electronic archiving.

Dr. Hans Bärfuss began implementing PDF technology in customer projects as early as 1994. He founded PDF Tools AG in 2002 in response to increasing demand.
Today, PDF Tools AG is an internationally leading enterprise in the field of PDF technology. Its high-quality solutions can be used on every significant operating system. Our core competence lies in professional, server-based programming components that are characterized by outstanding quality and geared towards processing high volumes, thus achieving an unprecedented level of performance.
Milestones of corporate development:
1994
Initial developments involving PDF technology (PDF Library) for use in customized software developments, in those days still as a part of Glance AG, a Swiss software engineering service provider.
2000
PDF Tools AG is founded as a subsidiary to focus on the development of products based on PDF technology.
2002
PDF Tools AG becomes a self-sufficient and independent enterprise and opens a sales branch in Canada to serve the markets in North and South America.

2005
The PDF/A ISO standard is officially approved and introduced. As a delegate of the Swiss Standards Association SNV to ISO Working Group 171 (PDF/A and PDF 1.7), Dr. Hans Bärfuss plays a pivotal role in developing the PDF/A ISO standard.
2006
Initiator and founding member of the PDF/A Competence Center based in Berlin.
2009
15 years of PDF know-how, staff growth and a new corporate image in the current design.
As of 2010
Internationalization of the PDF/A Competence Center – with meanwhile more than 100 members from across the globe. Development of a sales branch in Asia.
As co-initiator of the ISO standard PDF/A for long-term electronic archiving, it is to a significant extent thanks to PDF Tools AG that the ISO standard is gaining acceptance across the globe
