Newsletter July 2017

It's that time again – the latest final release is now available online, with plenty of exciting new features. As always, you’ll find the relevant facts in the summary below, with more detail in the corresponding release notes.

On the occasion of our 15th anniversary, we handed the mic to our customers so that they could have their say. We’ve published a small selection of their numerous exciting responses, and will be updating it on an ongoing basis until the end of the year. Thank you, everyone!

The site now also features facts about our daily routine at PDF Tools AG and an interview with insights into our company’s philosophy.

But back to the release facts!

For the new release 4.9, the 3-Heights™ Document Converter Client received a significant upgrade both on the back and on the front end.

  • The client can now be connected to a Document Converter Service using the webservice interface or, as before, to a Document Converter Service on your local network.
  • The new Document Converter Client GUI application offers a simple way for the user to preview and manipulate the converted pdf documents and pages. It allows you to preview and navigate the output document, zoom into individual pages, delete selected pages and change the page order. The application can be either used as a stand-alone GUI or as a preview dialog when converting files using the shell extension or office add-ins. Furthermore, an optional customizing is available, which enables you to add and edit metadata fields.

The release 4.9 also brings useful extensions for web developers, namely PHP5.6 and PHP7.0 interfaces for the following components: 3-Heights™ PDF Merge Split, 3-Heights™ PDF Optimizer and 3-Heights™ PDF to PDF/A Converter. You can expect PHP interfaces for other components in future releases as well.

Have fun reading the new release notes, and have an exciting and/or relaxing summer!

Preparing eDossiers for PDF/A conversion with the 3-Heights™ Document Converter

Solothurn’s hospitals needed a solution for the proper archiving of electronic case files in their system. The digital environment, an eDossier based on SAP Folders Management, required all incoming Office documents and emails to be converted to PDF/A before being archived.

PDF and PDF/A functionality in a document management system

Rottal-Metzg AG needed to add a document management system to its myBica ERP solution. The usual method – integrating an existing archiving solution into the ERP – was obviously unsuitable here: the ERP and archiving solution needed to feel completely seamless for Rottal-Metzg AG’s customers.

Quality over quantity

PDF Tools is celebrating its 15th anniversary this year. Despite its relatively short history, it has been very successful so far. BIT caught up with the company’s founder Dr. Hans Bärfuss to discuss the secret to his success, a surprise trip to mark the company’s anniversary, the advantages of having a centralized development department, and the challenges facing the archivists of the future.

Document processes in the digital age

Recognizing new potential and using it successfully has to be learned – from rush jobs to digital long-term archives.
