DMS Expo in Stuttgart – September 20 – 22, 2011

PDF/A-2

Just before summer break, the ISO released the standard ISO 19005-2, better known as PDF/A‑2. Our components Image to PDF Converter, PDF Producer, PDF to PDF/A Converter, PDF Validator and the Document Converter solution are ready for PDF/A-2. Customers with a valid maintenance contract have access to a free update.

PDF/A was first introduced in 2005. The second part of the standard introduces several feature enhancements requested by many customers. The most important being:

  • The list of compression types has been extended by JPEG2000
  • Transparent contents produced by graphic programs are now allowed
  • Optional contents (also known as layers) can be made visible or invisible
  • Multiple PDF/A files can be bundled in one file (collection, package)
  • The additional conformity level U (Unicode) allows for creating searchable files without having to fulfill the strict requirements of the conformity level A (accessibility)

New is also the fact that PDF/A-2 itself bases on ISO 32000-1, the standard for PDF 1.7. PDF/A-2 is meant as an extension to PDF/A-1. The second part shall complement the first part and not replace it. PDF/A conformant software must flawlessly process and render both parts.

PDF/VT – The ISO Standard for the Printing of Variable and Transactional Documents

In August 2010, the International Organization for Standardization (ISO) released the PDF standard under the number ISO 16612-2, also called PDF/VT, which deals with the reliable document exchange for variable data and transactional (VT) printing. This article explains the motivation for creating the standard, describes several performance features, and indicates their possible ramifications on the future market.

Success Story:

ERP Solution with Legally Binding Archiving of PDF Documents Including Digital Signatures

Rottal-Metzg AG is a meat processing company. Some 60 employees deliver products to resellers, restaurants, employee canteens and retailers in central Switzerland, resulting in yearly revenues of about CHF 20 Mio. The company has been using an ERP solution based on the uniPaaS framework from Magic Software for several years. As part of an internal improvement project, based on the existing framework, an enhancement was made in order to archive creditor receipts as ZertES-conforming (federal regulation dealing with digital signatures, ZertES SR 943.03) PDF documents.
