Technical Article: The Long-Term Retention of Emails

Version 2.1 of the 3-Heights™ Product Family Released

PDF Tools AG releases version 2.1 of all products of the 3-Heights™ family. This version again contains numerous enhancements and improvements to existing products and introduces three entirely new tools. As usual, the new version is made available to all customers with a valid maintenance contract at no costs. Simultaneously with this release, version 3.6 of the classic products has become finalized.

The 3-Heights™ JPM to PDF Converter is a shell tool for converting JPM (JPEG-2000 part 6) streams to PDF/A-2 conforming documents. The tool is part of the product 3-Heights™ Image To PDF Converter. It is mainly used for migrating archives containing scanned documents, which were stored in the mixed raster content (MRC) format, to equivalent PDF/A conforming documents without the need of recompressing the image data streams.

The new component 3-Heights™ Text to PDF Converter replaces the corresponding component from the Classic family. It provides additional features, such as the processing of Unicode files. It is available as shell tool and as API. It replaces the previous text-conversion in the 3-Heights™ Document Converter.

The most important enhancements and improvements to the existing products with this version include, but are not limited to:

  • Creation of PDF/A-2 compliant documents - All components support the compliance levels 2b and 2u. Some additionally support the compliance level 2a.
  • All components that are able to read PDF documents can now handle optional content (layers). With some tools, the visibility can be controlled.
  • All reading components now support the decryption of the strong AES 256 bit encryption algorithm (PDF Standard Security, Revision 5).
  • There are numerous enhancements with respect to memory consumption and robustness.

Additional and more detailed information is available in the Release Notes.

The Long-Term Retention of Emails

Today, all business leaders know that a large portion of their organization’s value lies in its documents. Documents also form the basis for demonstrating proof in legal disputes. The flood of emails in businesses is now requiring archivists to confront the special demands of retaining digital documents. This challenge is too often left up to the suppliers of archiving systems alone.
