New features of the 3-Heights™ PDF Security component simplify bulk digital signing and verification of archives and e-invoices.

The electronic signature provides considerable advantages with respect to legal certainty and automated processes when it comes to digital documents. This is particularly true for the most common application areas such as e-invoicing and long term archiving.

The 3-Heights™ PDF Security component simplifies the creation and verification of digital signatures especially for these application areas. Signing a large number of documents can be done efficiently and meeting high security standards in combination with hardware security modules (HSM), such as products from our partner SafeNet. Supported are also USB tokens for certificates, e.g. the SuisseID, distributed by the major certificate authorities.

The component can apply simple, advanced and qualified electronic signatures. Additionally, long term signatures are supported, which are mainly required in archiving. This is achieved by embedding revocation information and the entire trust chain from the signer to the issuer’s root certificate.

An exceptional feature of the component is its ability to apply Qualified Electronic Signatures (QES) that are PDF/A compliant at the same time.

The product is available for Windows and the most used Unix operating systems. It makes use of standards such as the platform independent interface PKCS#11 and the Microsoft CryptAPI interface.

New Add-On for ABBYY FineReader Engine 10.

Besides the established ABBYY FineReader Engine 8 and the Tesseract OCR Engine 2, the 3-Heights™ OCR Enterprise Add-On now also supports the new ABBYY FineReader Engine 10. This allows you to benefit from the enhancements of the market leading OCR manufacturer.
The new engine not only comes with new technical features, it also offers a wider range of license types, in particular to support smaller volumes. Another advantage is the functionality to deactivate and reactivate license keys. This simplifies the migration of the software to a new platform significantly.

Foundation of the Swiss Chapter of the PDF Association.

In 2006 the Association for Digital Document Standards (ADDS), based in Berlin, was founded. The “PDF Association”, an initiative of the association, is a cooperation between numerous world-leading companies and experts in PDF technology. The aim of the PDF Association is to promote the exchange of information and experience in the area of long-term archiving in accordance with ISO 19005: PDF/A.

PDF Tools AG is a founding member of the ADDS and the PDF Association and has now initiated the foundation of the Swiss Chapter of the PDF Association together with another Swiss member and business partner: Interact Consulting AG. The majority of the 12 Swiss members have expressed their interest in joining. The formation meeting will take place on January 20, 2011 in the offices of PDF Tools AG.

The main goals of the Swiss Chapter are:

  • Promote the use of PDF/A as a standard digital document format
  • Establish the Swiss Chapter of the PDF Association as the authority to answer questions about digital document formats and ISO standards
  • Build a common platform of the Swiss members of the ADDS for organizing events, exchanging experiences and building a knowledge base about digital document
  • Support the general integration of the Swiss members of the ADDS in digitalization initiatives such as eCH, eGovernment, eHealth, SuisseID, etc.

New Swiss members are most welcome to actively participate in the PDF Association. For further information, or if you have questions, please contact Brigitte Aeschbacher, .

Success Story:
Minimization of Paper Filing at the Department for Education and Sport of the City of Zurich.

The introduction of the new act about the funding of child care in Zurich had raised the question how to efficiently handle contracts in an enterprise content management environment. Regulations require all households, which receive support from the city of Zurich, to communicate changes in their household and financial situation on a yearly basis. The census forms (12’000 applications per year) reach the households by sending them through the post. For the coordination of holiday support another 60’000 holiday support applications must be processed and managed annually. Thus far these documents had be processed, mailed and archived in paper form. The entire handling was considerably simplified by means of the comprehensive solution implemented by Advellence. The solution includes the “Information Manager” ELOenterprise, an SAP interface as well as the 3-Heights™ Document Converter Service.
