License Model

The objective of the PDF Tools AG license model is to find the best possible form of licensing for your requirements. It is intended to represent a fair value in return for the benefits you gain from our PDF software and components. Our license model is coupled to quantities for the majority of products to account for ever-increasing "virtualization". Our sales team will be pleased to work out a customized solution in the event our license model is unable to fully meet your requirements. We differentiate between the following license types:

Client License

Server License

OEM License

Evaluation License

For API products we also differentiate between:

SDK - Software Developer Kit for the development of applications

RTK - Runtime Kits for software distribution

You will receive free of charge any new version released within 30 days of your purchase. You will need a Contract for Maintenance and Support to continue receiving new versions, bugfixes and personal support after the 30-day period has expired. Evaluation versions are valid for 30 days.

When you purchase a product you are accepting our License conditions.

Client License

A client license entitles the licensee to use the licensed software on one (1) client computer. This does not include the right to use the licensed software for providing simultaneous access to multiple processes.

A client computer is a computer that is used by one individual user. The following are examples of client computers: desktop computers and laptops with Windows 2000 Workstation, Windows XP, Windows Vista or Windows 7 operating systems.

Client licenses include the right to process 6,000 pages per month. If this limit is exceeded please contact our sales department to agree on an individual settlement to suit your volume.

Server License

A server license entitles the licensee to use the licensed software on one (1) server (or client) computer. The server license is also valid for a server cluster at one physical location. The limit of concurrent users and the monthly page volume is defined in the invoice or in another purchase document.

A server computer is a computer that can be accessed simultaneously by multiple end users or application processes. Examples of server computers include operating systems for Windows 2000 servers, Windows 2003 servers, Windows 2008 servers, virtualized systems and the majority of UNIX operating systems.

The right to process 6,000 pages per month is included in each concurrent user license. The basic license with 5 concurrent users therefore includes a processing capacity of 30,000 pages per month. If this limit is exceeded please contact our sales department to agree on an individual settlement to suit your volume.

OEM License

An OEM license gives the licensee the right to integrate the licensed software as an integral component of a standard solution, and to distribute the solution to end customers and to run it on their computers. This right does not include the right to use the licensed software to develop applications that themselves can be used as development tools. Please contact our sales team if you are interested in integrating our technology in your solutions.

Evaluation License

An evaluation license allows the evaluation of the licensed software to verify whether the licensed software fulfills the licensee's requirements. It is prohibited to use an evaluation license for development, testing purposes or productive use. It is valid for 30 days after downloading.

The following differentiation between SDK and RTK is only of relevance to API (Application Programming Interface) products. We also differentiate between the two following software kits with regard to API

SDK - Software Developer Kit

The SDK contains all the tool components that enable application development. Every developer workstation used to develop the application must have a client or server license.

RTK - Runtime Kit

The RTK only contains the runtime components that are needed to operate the application in test mode, QA or in production. Every workstation using these runtime components must have a client or server license.

Note: License conditions can change without prior notice when maintenance contracts are renewed. Please contact our sales team in the event that any changes of this nature should prove to be incompatible with your solution.
